How to Get to Taormina

Getting to Taormina is an adventure filled with beautiful landscapes and the promise of Sicilian charm at the end of your journey. The nearest airport is Catania-Fontanarossa, about an hour’s drive away.ย

We rented a car at the airport and used Sicily by car rental. We did opt for the extra car insurance because driving in Sicily can be nuts.

You can reach Taormina by car rental, direct bus, or scenic train ride. However, it can be difficult to do day trips if you donโ€™t have your own car.

The Best Time to Visit Taormina’s Beaches

Timing is everything when planning a beach getaway. In Taormina, the ideal period stretches from late spring to early autumn, with June to September offering the perfect blend of warm water temperatures and sunny weather. July and August are the peak months, when the Mediterranean sun is at its finest, and the water temperature invites you to dive in without a second thought.

We visited in June and the water was cold this year but I personally would not visit in July and August because of the over tourism, the heat and the peak season prices.

Weather and Water Temperature

Summer in Taormina is a dream, with average temperatures ranging from 25ยฐC to 30ยฐC (77ยฐF to 86ยฐF). The water temperature during these months hovers around a delightful 24ยฐC to 26ยฐC (75ยฐF to 79ยฐF), making it perfect for swimming, snorkeling, and diving.

If tranquility is what you seek, consider accommodations near Isola Bella or Mazzarรฒ โ€“ areas known for their stunning views and serene atmosphere.

Taormina’s Most Beautiful Beach: Isola Bella

Isola Bella is often described as the jewel of Taormina. This small island, connected to the mainland by a narrow strip of beach, is not only the most beautiful but also the most iconic. Surrounded by crystal-clear waters and lush vegetation, it’s a paradise for nature lovers and photographers alike.

The best way to reach Isola Bella Beach from Taormina is by taking the cable car, which is just a few minutes walk from the beach. The cable car provides a spectacular and convenient way to reach the beach, offering stunning views along the way. We opted to take it down, but it costs $3 each one-way so we decided to only ride it down and come back by bus.

It is a beautiful view but a bit scary for those afraid of heights. I am glad we did it. Once you arrive, you then still have to go down steps, which I believe is over 100 steps, fine to go down, just tiring in the heat to go back up. We opted for the bus on our way back, but the bus stop was confusing. It ended up being to the left of the steps and you had to walk 5 minutes there.

We also saw Lidos options offering paid car service and an umbrella lounge rental special. You can ask your hotel reception for these options.

Another option is the Hop-on Hop-off Bus Tour, which stops at established points along the route and brings tourists to Isola Bella. Additionally, a boat tour from Giardini Naxos covers most of the coast around Isola Bella, allowing swimming and enjoying the crystal-clear waters around the island.

Mazzarรฒ: A Spectacular Seaside Escape

Just north of Isola Bella, Mazzarรฒ beach is nestled in a serene bay, offering a more intimate beach experience. One of the most popular beaches in the area, it’s accessible by a spectacular cable railway from Taormina, providing breathtaking views as you descend towards the shore.

ย Mazzarรฒ’s charm lies in its small size and crystal-clear waters, making it a favorite for both locals and visitors. This is the beach you land at once you go down the steps. Overall, it is a super rocky area, even more so than I imagined, so swim shoes are recommended.

You can find beach activities such as boat rides and jet skis. There are a few lidos, but it was pricier to rent an umbrella and lounge chairs here. However, we loved the restaurant because there was a self-service section where you didn’t have to pay for table service. We ordered drinks and ate arancini before heading to soak in the sun.

You can hang out at the beach without renting a lounge chair, but I recommend an umbrella and sturdy towel or blanket.

Bonus tip: Go shopping on the steps down to the beach. You can find great crochet dresses there, and I had a super pleasant experience with a street vendor towards the bottom of the steps that I share here.

Giardini Naxos: The Longest Beach Near Taormina

To the south of Taormina lies Giardini Naxos, boasting the longest beach in the area. This shore is a beautiful blend of fine sand and pebbles, set against a backdrop of lush Mediterranean flora.

Giardini Naxos caters to all beach preferences, offering both free beach areas for those who love to lay their towel directly on the sand and well-equipped lidos for visitors seeking comfort and amenities.

How to get to Giardini Naxos

To get to Giardini Naxos, you can consider the following transportation options:

From Taormina: By bus: You can reach Giardini Naxos from Taormina by bus. The nearest bus stop to Giardini Naxos is a 30-minute walk from the Taormina-Giardini Naxos train station.

From Catania: By bus: Buses run from Catania to Giardini Naxos. The journey takes about 37 minutes and costs around โ‚ฌ4.

Beach Accessibility

My favorite Taormina Beach Lido

Are Taormina’s beaches free? The answer is yes and no. While there are public beaches like Mazzarรฒ and Spisone where you can lay your towel on the sand without a fee, many of Taormina’s beaches are managed by beach clubs that charge for entry, sunbeds, and umbrellas. However, the amenities and services are worth the price for many visitors.

Before arriving in Taormin, we wanted to do a beach day. I thought we would go to Giardini Naxos, but it turned out it was more north, and I did not want to go so far. I googled a Lido near us and found Lido De Sol Rei, and I am so glad I did. We parked on the highway and headed down the steps toward this pathway.

Then we saw the restaurant and umbrellas with beach chairs to the right, plus another lido option on the left. This was our favorite beach day! The food was fantastic and pretty affordable.

Hidden Gems and Public Taormina Beaches

For those looking for a more secluded spot, Taormina doesn’t disappoint. Hidden beaches like Spisone offer a quieter alternative to the more popular spots. Meanwhile, public beaches provide a glimpse into the local beach culture, free from the trappings of commercialization.

Spisone Beach is a popular coastal destination located near Taormina on the eastern coast of Sicily. The beach is known for its smooth sand and convenient bay, making it an ideal location for swimming. Unlike some other beaches in the area, Spisone Beach does not have large stones in the water, allowing for a more comfortable swimming experience.

Additionally, the beach offers both paid and free sections, providing options for visitors with different preferences. Spisone Beach is accessible from the A18 motorway exit of Taormina, making it convenient for travelers to reach.

The parking situation at Spisone Beach is limited. According to available information, there is no dedicated parking at the beach itself. However, since the beach is located near the A18 motorway exit of Taormina, visitors can explore nearby paid parking options or consider using public transportation to reach the beach.

It is advisable to plan for parking in advance, especially during peak times, to ensure a smooth visit to Spisone Beach.

Why Taormina Captivates

But what makes Taormina so famous? Beyond its breathtaking beaches, Taormina is steeped in history, with ancient Greek ruins, a stunning hilltop setting, and a cultural tapestry that weaves through every street and shoreline. It’s a place where the past and present merge, creating an unforgettable experience for every visitor.

It is just a vibe! I was scared it would not live up to the hype, but it exceeded my expectations and one of our favorite beach days. on our 10-day Sicily trip was near Taormina, at Lido Re del Sole.
