Last week, Max and I tossed our sun hats in the car, loaded the drone into the backseat, and set off for a four-day beach-hopping bonanza in Himarë, Albania. Nestled along the Albanian Riviera, Himarë’s coastline is a kaleidoscope of crystalline coves, pebbly stretches, and azure waters that practically beg you to cannonball in.
We made our home base at the chic Rea Boutique Hotel, chartered a boat trip that felt like our own private island tour, and sampled everything from Blue Flag favorites to hidden pebble bays. If you’re dreaming of sun-soaked days, family-friendly spots, or Instagram-worthy panoramas (drone footage, anyone?), you’ve come to the right place.
Here is your comprehensive guide to Himar beaches, covering amenities, accessibility, parking tips, prices, and much more. This post contains affiliate links.

Why Himarë Is the Perfect Base for Beach Explorers
Tucked between lush green hills and the glittering Ionian Sea, Himarë town feels like a closely guarded secret that Albanians are finally willing to whisper to the world. Its pastel-hued houses tumble down hillsides toward a modest harbor, and a single-street promenade bustles with café tables, ice-cream parlors, and families strolling at sunset. Yet despite its growing popularity, Himarë never feels overcrowded—the pace here is more “amble” than “rush,” making it the ideal launchpad for day trips to nearby coves and beaches.
Waking up in Himarë means listening to the calm of the sea and the sound of the birds with a wonderful day ahead. You’ll fuel up for a day of sand-in-your-toes adventures—and you’ll appreciate returning to town each evening to recharge your camera batteries, re-sync with Wi-Fi, and compare notes over a crisp glass of local white wine.

Best Time to Visit & Weather Insights
If you’re plotting your escape to Himarë beaches, aim for late May through early October—when the sun’s out, the tavernas are buzzing, and the sea feels like a warm bathtub. Here’s the lowdown on air and water temperatures so you can pack smart (and know when to swap your towel for a light cardigan at sunset).
Average Air Temperatures
- June: Highs around 29 °C (84 °F), lows near 18 °C (64 °F); comfortably warm without feeling like a sauna. We went at the end of June, and let me tell you, it is HOT! I would not go in August for sure.
- July: Peak summer heat—average high 32 °C (90 °F), low 21 °C (70 °F); perfect for tanning, swimming, and convincing yourself you’re part lizard. I must say that Albania overall was extremely hot, and as a Brazilian-born South Florida resident, my heat tolerance is high, but be prepared.
- August: Hottest month! Highs hit 33 °C (91 °F), lows at 21 °C (70 °F); if you can brave the midday sun (or hide under an umbrella), you’ll be rewarded with brilliantly clear skies. I probably would never go in August.
Average Sea Temperatures
- June: Water warms up to 22.7 °C (72.9 °F)—refreshing, but you’ll adjust by splash number three.
- July: A balmy 25 °C (77 °F) on average, with peaks up to 27.7 °C (82 °F); complacent swimmers are born this month.
- August: Similar story—around 25.6 °C (78 °F)—so go ahead, linger in the shallows forever.

With swimming season stretching from June through November, you’ve got a wide window to ride that Ionian wave. Just remember: July and August draw the biggest crowds (and the most prominent DJs at Jale), so if you prefer a bit more elbow room, consider June or September instead.

Where to Stay in Himare
What drew me to Himare was a YouTube video from Brazilian bloggers Esse Mundo e Nosso! They showcased a fantastic hotel with a jacuzzi on the balcony overlooking the sea. I searched online for availability, but the hotel appeared to be fully booked for my dates, so I decided to email them and provide my WhatsApp number. We then began communicating via WhatsApp, and they told me they were in the process of finishing up two rooms and that they would indeed be available during my Himare travel dates. You can’t imagine how excited I got!
The room was beyond my expectations! Think luxurious boho chic with a huge jacuzzi on the balcony, which can even act as a pool if you put colder water in it, plus, of course, the beautiful turquoise waters as you wake up! I loved the cozy beds, the view from the shower, and the hospitality and people I met there.

Thank you, Skye, for coming to our rescue when we were unsure how to get to the hotel. Thank you so much, Arta & Nestoras; I loved meeting you! Thank you for your hard work and service, and for making us feel so wonderful. Your team is terrific! I 100% recommend this hotel and you should book with them directly! Here are some more photos from our stay.
Navigating Himarë Beaches
By Land: Bikes, Cars, and Foot
- Bicycle Rentals: Complimentary at Rea Boutique Hotel. Ideal for Livadhi (5-minute ride), Spile (10 minutes), and Sopot (20-minute scenic pedal through olive groves).
- Car Rentals: Approximately €30/day. Roads to main beaches are paved and well-marked; hidden coves may demand dirt-road skills.
- Walking: Himarë promenade to Livadhi is an easy 15-minute stroll. Comfortable shoes are recommended for pebbly paths.
- Taxi – If you want to explore other beaches, I recommend this taxi service, Andreas. He had fair prices and follow me on IG to DM so you can get his Whatsapp number.

By Sea: Private Boat Charters
We had a great 4-hour boat ride tour and we stopped by some of the highlights. We hopped between coves like Porto Palermo, Monkey Bay, and Gjipe—places unreachable by road. The boat charter costs approximately €20-30 per person, and you have the freedom to choose where to anchor. Pack snorkels, picnic bites, and a waterproof camera bag. Packing for Himare Beaches
We needed to purchase some essential items for our trip to the Albanian Riviera. The first was swim shoes! Many of the beaches are super rocky, so to venture out and explore, I knew we needed swim shoes. These were the ones we ultimately purchased on Amazon.

- Next up is my favorite Albania pre-purchase, the silicone covers for my hair products and skin care products. I don’t think I can travel without these silicone covers anymore.
- European wall adapter. One mistake we made was taking only one adapter this time. I recommend at least two for every three people. Also, remember to get the ones that have both USB and USB-C inputs.
- Portable phone charger. We had brought two, but we misplaced one in the Saranda area. Max loves this bulkier portable charger, and he may be right. I ordered a different one that had to be charged via an outlet, and it broke towards the end of the trip, so let’s stick with Max’s choice.
- Sunscreens. I got a new Korean sunscreen from Olive Young, which is the best website for US users to purchase sunscreens, and I love it! I waited until I got to Himare to visit the pharmacies and pick up more sunscreens, as I’m obsessed with sunscreens in Europe. They have more filters and feel great on your skin. Just visit your local pharmacy and get a few.
- Waterproof Bag. I didn’t take one and regretted it, so here is a great dry bag I see on Amazon. This one also comes with a waterproof cell phone cover, which you will also need for beach and boat days.
- Soft towel for beach days. We had some great ones that act like beach laying mats but forgot them back home.
- Room in your luggage! I had no idea Albania would be such a great place for shopping, especially for flip-flops, shoes, and other souvenirs. Check out this TikTok video. I also loved the Geo Art Boutique so much that I even went back into town to get a third bikini set from the one I had purchased and some additional jewelry.
Dining in Himare & Town Life
After sun-drenched days, Himarë’s restaurant scene hits the sweet spot between local authenticity and laid-back variety:
- Artxontiko: For the kindest owner services, delicious seafood, and the best limoncello spritz, this is a local favorite located at the end of the promenade, overlooking the hilltop. Please tell the Fuse that the Brazilian traveler sent you. He will be beaming and probably say something like, I love Brazilians!
- The Rea Boutique Hotel Restaurant was incredible. We had our first dinner here, and every day, the breakfast was made to order, feeling like a feast.

- Fig and Olive Bistro: This was highly recommended by hotel guests, in addition to the excellent restaurant at the Rea Boutique Hotel. Make your reservation now!
📲+19293236071. - Taverna Pupi (Livadhi Beach): Grilled catch-of-the-day with driftwood benches and uninterrupted sea views.
- Sazan (Town Center): Elevated Albanian classics—think mint-infused stuffed eggplant and lamb chops glazed in honey.
- Il Gusto Italiano (Off Main Square): An emergency pasta fix with a truffle-cream sauce for those pasta cravings.
- Duke’s Scoop (Promenade): Gelato legends: lemon-mandarin swirl is a must-try.
- Himare 28 looked awesome, but we didn’t have time to eat there.
Post-dinner, grab a local draft or Aperol spritz at one of the seaside bars or rooftop bars. Take a twilight stroll down the cobbled harbor while fishermen mend nets under lantern light.
Practical Tips & Local Insights
- Opening Season: Mid-May to early October; most facilities are open from 9 AM to 7 PM.
- Language: “Faleminderit” means thank you; “sa kushton?” means how much? A few friendly words go a long way.
- Cash vs. Card: ATMs are plentiful, but beach bars often prefer cash—carry small bills (20s and 10s).
- Safety: Lifeguards are present on Livadhi and Jale; please swim within the designated zones.
- Sun Protection: Shade is limited—rent umbrellas early or bring your own beach tent.

Family-Friendliness Comparison
Not all shores are created equal when you’ve got little ones—or maybe a teenager who’s equal parts water baby and screen addict. Here’s how Himarë’s top beaches stack up for families:
- Livadhi Beach: Highly family-friendly. Gentle pebbles ease into calm waters, lifeguards on duty, accessible ramps for strollers, and a playground-style inflatable aqua park in peak season. Changing rooms and toilet facilities make life easier for parents of toddlers.
- Spile Beach: Good for families with older kids. Jet-skis and pedal boats keep teens entertained, but the deeper water near the bars means younger swimmers need close supervision. Plenty of shaded spots under natural rock overhangs.
- Sopot Beach: Perfect for littles. Soft sand, shallow shoreline, and no sunbed obstacles mean kids can run free. Limited amenities mean pack-and-play style—bring snacks and shade.
- Jale Beach: Best for families with adventurous tweens or teens. Day-to-evening beach parties might not suit naptime needs, but early mornings are quiet and safe. Beach bars offer kid-friendly mocktails until afternoon.
- Porto Palermo Cove: Not ideal for very young children due to pebbles and uneven terrain, but families with older kids who love history will appreciate exploring the castle ruins after a swim.
- Monkey Bay: Rugged and remote—skip for young families but a thrill for teens looking to snorkel and cliff-jump under supervision.
Ready to choose? For complete convenience and safety, Livadhi or Sopot are your go-to options; for teen-friendly thrills, Spile or Jale will win cheers.

Hiking Trails & Scenic Viewpoints
Himarë isn’t just a beach town—venture a little inland (or up into the hills) and you’ll find hiking trails and viewpoints that serve up sweeping panoramas of the Ionian coastline.
- Himarë Castle Hill Trail: Just above town, a 20–30 minute uphill walk from the promenade leads to the hilltop ruins of Himarë Castle. Stone pathways and informational plaques guide you to vantage points overlooking the harbor and mountains—ideal for sunrise or golden-hour shots.
- Sopot–Porto Palermo Coastal Path: A moderately challenging 4 km trail links Sopot Beach to Porto Palermo Cove. You’ll traverse olive groves, rocky outcrops, and pine-shaded stretches before arriving at the castle-framed cove. The route is unmarked in places, so sturdy footwear and water are a must.
- Gjipe Canyon Hike: Begin at a small trailhead parking lot (€3/day) near Qeparo. The 1.5-hour trek through Gjipe canyon follows a stream bed before opening onto a secluded pebble beach—snorkeling optional, but highly recommended.
- Llogara National Park Viewpoint (Day Trip): About a 45-minute drive north on SH8 brings you to the Llogara Pass (1,025 m elevation). Multiple short walks (15–30 minutes) lead to lookout points where clouds drift below mountain peaks and you can spot the Riviera’s curve from above.
All trails are best tackled in the early morning or late afternoon to avoid peak sun. Remember to pack water, snacks, and a camera for those Insta-worthy backdrops! P.S. I tried doing a trail behind the hotel. There is a staircase. Let’s say we didn’t find the place, walked too much, and were significantly out of breath, but at least we had nice views, lol.
Beyond Jet-Skis: Other Water Sports & Activities
If you’re craving more action than inflatable floats, Himarë’s beaches offer a variety of aquatic adventures:
- Snorkeling & Scuba Diving: Clear waters around Porto Palermo and Monkey Bay teem with marine life. Local dive shops (e.g., “Dive Albania” at Livadhi) offer guided snorkeling (€15/person) and PADI-certified scuba dives (€60–€80/session).
- Stand-Up Paddleboarding (SUP): Rent a board on Spile (€12/hr) or join a sunset paddle group departing from Livadhi (€20/person). Balancing 10 meters offshore with the coastline at your feet is pure zen.
- Kayaking: Single and tandem kayak rentals (€10/hr) are available at Sopot and Jale. Explore hidden caves and sea arches at your own pace.
- Windsurfing & Kitesurfing: Summer winds near Sopot and Jale create perfect conditions for wind sports. Beginner lessons (~€30/session) and rental gear (€20/hr) are offered by local schools.
- Banana Boat & Inflatable Rides: For group thrills, hop on a banana boat (€5/ride) or try towable tubes (€10/ride) off busy beaches like Jale.
- Beach Volleyball & Yoga Classes: Spotted on Livadhi’s sandy end at 6 PM daily (free pick-up games) and morning beachfront yoga (€10/class) at Rea Boutique’s terrace.
Whether you’re after adrenaline or chill vibes, Himarë’s coastline has something beyond sunbed lounging—just pick your paddle or dive mask and dive in!

Conclusion
Himarë stole our hearts for a straightforward reason: here, authentic Albanian charm meets the kind of coastal bliss that most travelers only dream about. Whether you’re chasing the Blue Flag at Livadhi, hunting Instagram angles at Porto Palermo, or simply sipping raki on the promenade, every moment feels unhurried and genuine. Four days flew by, but the coastline left its imprint—sun-kissed skin, lingering sunsets, and plans for a return trip already dancing in our heads.
So pack your flip-flops, download extra drone batteries, and set your GPS for Himarë. This little town on the edge of the Ionian Sea proves that the best beach vacations aren’t just about sand and water—they’re about setting a slower pace, savoring local flavors, and discovering hidden gems that stay with you long after the tide rolls out.
