Updated August 15, 2024. Check out the requirements plus the latest updates as right now, Euronews reported the first person ever to be given Italy’s Digital Nomad Visa.

Italy recently introduced the Digital Nomad Visa, a significant milestone for remote workers who desire to experience Mediterranean life. This visa initiative is tailored for those who can work independently from any location and aligns with the global shift towards flexible work environments.

I plan to apply for the Italy Digital Nomad Visa in 2024 and will document the process on my TikTok account. I will also update this article. I can see myself working in a historic Italian city or a picturesque landscape. And let’s not forget about the excellent cuisine!

Plus, with the digital nomad visa in Italy, I will have access to all the EU countries and pay EU prices for tourist attractions. Count me in!

Key Features of the Italy Digital Nomad Visa

This Digital Nomas Visa allows individuals to stay in Italy for a specific period while working remotely for non-Italian companies. Key features include the flexibility it offers regarding travel within the Schengen Area.

The Visa is also family-friendly: It uniquely permits the inclusion of close family members, enhancing its appeal for digital nomads with families. If you approve it, it will be valid for one year, allowing you to renew it annually.

What is the Digital Nomad Visa?

Eligibility: Who Can Apply for the Italy Digital Nomad Visa?

The visa targets non-EU citizens working remotely for companies or clients outside Italy. Applicants must demonstrate a “highly qualified” status, often with specialized skills or professional experience. The definition of highly skilled is still unclear.

There are 8 main areas to qualify for in order to get approved for Italyโ€™s Digital Nomad Visa.

Income Requirement

Applicants must demonstrate steady income from remote work, with specific documentation required to prove financial stability and employment status.  You must prove that you have worked as a remote worker for at least six months. This can mean that you work for a non-Italian company or that you are self-employed.

You must make at least 28,000 Euros a year and provide proof, such as a letter from your employer, pay stubs, or bank statements. They based this on at least three times the minimum level required for exemption from healthcare costs in Italy.

Update: Provide IRS transcripts, bank statements, job contractss, and salary slips from the last two years. I would do all three just in case and be overprepared to paint the full financial picture.

Also, please note that they stated you must be a โ€œhighly skilledโ€ worker. I havenโ€™t found a clear definition for what this entails, but as I go through the process myself, I will find out.

Update: Legal proof of at least six months of highly professional experience as a digital nomad or remote worker.

Education/Professional Skills:
A Bachelorโ€™s degree or a technical college degree (minimum three years) from a certified academic U.S. institution, apostilled, and CIMEA-certified (translated and notarized). OR

Professional Qualification:

For the Digital Nomad Visa, the job experience requirements can vary depending on the specific criteria set by the issuing country. Generally, for Italyโ€™s Digital Nomad Visa, you need to meet ONE of the following qualifications:

Five Years of Professional Experience: Alternatively, you can qualify with at least five years of professional experience in a relevant field, demonstrated through official documentation like job contracts and payroll records.

Three Years of Relevant Professional Experience: If you are applying based on professional qualifications, you need at least three years of relevant experience in the ITC (Information and Communication Technology) industry or technology sector. This experience should be certified and apostilled.

ITC stands for Information and Communication Technology. It’s a broad sector that encompasses a range of technology-related fields, including but not limited to software development, IT consulting, telecommunications, and digital services.

Updae: In my case, I have 11 years of Digital Marketing Experience and have worked in the ITC industry for 1.5 years, so I am opting for the professional one, which is a 5-year requirement.

Health Insurance

To apply for Italy’s Digital Nomad Visa, applicants must secure comprehensive health insurance that remains valid throughout their entire stay in Italy. This requirement ensures that digital nomads can access necessary medical services without burdening the Italian healthcare system.

To meet this requirement, applicants should obtain a health insurance policy that provides international coverage, including medical treatments, emergencies, and possibly repatriation. The policy must be valid for the duration of their stay in Italy, offering peace of mind while living and working in the country.

Update: You need to have a minimum of 30,000 Euros worth of health insurance coverage.

This document, typically an insurance certificate, must be presented as part of the visa application process to prove that the applicant has secured adequate healthcare coverage.

Accommodation Proof for digital nomad visa italy

For Italy’s Digital Nomad Visa, proving you have suitable accommodation in Italy for your stay is a crucial requirement. This means applicants must show they have a place to live in Italy, which can be demonstrated through a rental agreement, hotel booking, or a letter of invitation from an Italian resident.

Update: Lease agreement duly registered to the Italian tax authority โ€“ Agenzia delle Entrate);

The accommodation should be adequate for the applicant’s needs and comply with local housing standards, ensuring a safe and stable living environment during their stay in Italy. This documentation is essential for the visa application process, as it confirms that the applicant has arranged a stable residence, further establishing their commitment to living in Italy as a digital nomad or remote worker.

From what I see, you can make a Booking.com booking or get a letter of intent from a friend. I believe this will be needed towards the end of the process, so you can still begin the process even if you donโ€™t have your accommodations in place yet.

Update. Contact a realtor in Italy and have this lease agreement ready when you submit your documents or have an interview.

Digital Nomad or Remote Work Experience

To qualify for Italy’s Digital Nomad Visa, applicants must demonstrate at least six months of experience as digital nomads or remote workers. This requirement ensures that individuals are accustomed to and capable of maintaining a productive work environment outside of traditional office settings.

Applicants can fulfill this criterion by providing documentation of their employment history or evidence of continuous remote work. Acceptable forms of proof include contracts that indicate remote working arrangements, pay slips from remote employment, or any other official documents that verify a consistent record of remote work activities.

This experience showcases the applicant’s ability to manage their professional responsibilities while adapting to different environments effectively, a key characteristic of a successful digital nomad.

Update:

Criminal Record Requirements for the Digital Nomad Visa:

Update: The Paperwork on Miami Consultant Website doesn’t state the below requirement.

  1. Criminal Record Check: Applicants are often required to provide a police clearance certificate or a criminal record check from their home country or any country where they have lived for a significant period. This document confirms that you do not have a criminal record.
  2. Document Submission: You will need to submit the police clearance certificate with your visa application. The document should be recent and cover a specified period, typically covering the past 5 to 10 years.
  3. Translation and Apostille: If the certificate is not in the official language of the country issuing the visa, you may need to have it translated and apostilled (certified) to ensure it is acceptable.

Digital Nomad Visa Application Process

The visa application process necessitates an in-person appointment at an Italian consulate, where complete documentation, including a valid passport, proof of employment, and evidence of income, must be presented.

Update: This is no longer the case and now you can apply online/via email I

Applicants should schedule this appointment well in advance and ensure they have all the necessary documents prepared to facilitate a smooth application process. I didnโ€™t see an option on the website, so I emailed my nearest Italian Consulate, which is in Miami, and will update you guys.

Tax Compliance

Tax compliance is another critical requirement. Applicants must be tax-compliant in Italy before applying for the visa, necessitating a consultation with an Italian tax expert to understand and prepare the required tax documentation. This ensures that applicants are aware of their fiscal responsibilities and are prepared to adhere to Italian tax laws.

Will the remote workers have to pay taxes at the end of their stay? I donโ€™t know, but I will update this blog post as soon as I get some answers. Also, what kind of US tax documents will we need to show for our good standing? I also don’t know yet.

Italian Digital Nomad Visa Duration and Renewal

Finally, the Digital Nomad Visa is valid for one year and can be renewed annually, provided the applicant meets the necessary conditions. To renew the visa, applicants must maintain the eligibility criteria and initiate the renewal process before the current visa expires, demonstrating their ongoing commitment to complying with Italian immigration and labor laws.
